> Umbrella Drop |
In the examples above, I captured a sequence of drops hitting the surface of water. A circular splash (an umbrella drop) is created by releasing two drops one after another. After the first drop hits the surface of water, it bounces back up, creating a column of water. At this time the second drop catches up to the first one. The collision creates the splash. I constructed a custom device to dispense and synchronize the drops. Multiple pairs of drops were released, creating the above effects. You can easily create your own water drop dispensers using a bottle and some clear plastic tubing. Use a simple device such as Mariotte bottle to control the rate of water flow. The timer setup was very similar to the falling drop in the previous example. However, in this case the pictures were taken in a dark room. The Universal Photo Timer was used to activate the flash. The delay was set to catch one of the columns of water at its peak.
