The most common set for high speed photography includes the following components:

1. UPT_KIT1 has two versions, A version is more convenient for use with ballistics shots due to its built in microphone, B version would be better for balloon shots due to its external microphone.

2. UPT_OS1 or UPT_OS2 are low cost optical sensors. UPT_OS1 is more flexible since to be used with large and small objects (however it requires a separate laser pointer). UPT_OS2 is most useful for triggering on liquid drops (8mm/0.3" wide). Both sensors are used to activate your flash or your camera.

3. UPT_HS1. Most of the high speed photography involves the use of a flash. The hot shoe adapter is used to interface your flash to the timer.

Universal Photo Timer Kit (built-in microphone)

When you purchase a Universal Photo Timer Kit you will receive the Universal Photo Timer (the timer itself), 50+ page User Guide that includes a quick start guide, sample projects, detailed descriptions of menus and specifications including connections for flash and sensors.

On request we can also include few electronic components (such as 2.5mm plug, an infra-red transmitter diode and a photo transistor) that will help you to build your own external optical sensor or your own IR extension cable. Please email us right after the order to request the components.

The unit requires a 3.5mm plug to PC flash sync cord and/or hot shoe adapter for some functions. This adapter is an off the shelf accessory and can be purchased separately from a number of photography stores or from us. You will also require your own electronic flash unit (not included) for flash trigger and flash slave functions.

The unit requires a 9V battery (not included).

Universal Photo Timer Kit (external microphone)

This kit offers all the features of UPT_KIT1A. In this kit, the microphone is not mounted inside the unit; instead the microphone connects to the timer with a cable. The microphone is not sensitive enough to trigger the timer on small noises (such as a water splash), but it will trigger on most other loud noises.

The kit includes a 6ft microphone cable (standard sensitivity). Optional high sensitivity microphone is available.

The microphone cable plugs into the sensor 2 connector. The camera shutter cable or IR extension cables (not included) plug into the sensor 1 connector. External sensor inputs and sensor power signals are available from either sensor 1 or 2 connectors.

The unit requires a 9V battery (not included).

Infrared Beam Sensor

This sensor uses infrared light to detect objects in front of the sensor. The sensor does not require a reflector for it to work. This allows you to point the sensor in any direction, even upwards.

You can use the sensor to capture wildlife, sport events or social events. For example capture a bird as it lands on a bird feeder. Capture runners as they cross the finish line. Capture guests entering a wedding reception or a party. All this can be done unattended.

Sensor has maximum range of 5m (16ft). The triggering range can be adjusted down to approx. 1m (3ft). Typical reaction time of the sensor is 20ms. The sensor can be used indoors and outdoors.

The sensor operates in stand alone mode as well as together with the timer:

When used stand alone, you can use a Pocket Wizard device to activate remote cameras or flashes in response to the sensor trigger. You can also use a camera motor drive cable directly with the sensor. The sensor has a 3.5mm jack on its side for cable connections.

When used with the timer, you can create repeated exposures, control dead time and exposure delay. The timer can trigger a camera or a flash. You sensor interfaces to the timer with the supplied 3.5mm to 2.5mm connector cable.

You can connect up to two sensors to the timer and use them in a cross beam configuration. The timer will activate your camera when an object is placed in the location where the two beams intersect.

The sensor contains a 1/4-20 threaded fitting so that you can mount it on your camera tripod.

The sensor requires a 9V battery (not included).

Tripod is not included. Pocket Wizard devices and motor drive cables are not included.

If you want to use the sensor directly with a Pocket Wizard, the version below is supplied with 3.5mm to 3.5mm connector cable. The sensor is also configured to automatically re-trigger every 1 sec (up to 30 times) when the beam is constantly interrupted.

The sensor requires a 9V battery (not included).

Tripod is not included. Pocket Wizard devices and motor drive cables are not included. Pocket Wizard device requires 3.5mm trigger input.

IR Extension Cable

The timer operates your camera shutter using an infra-red signal. This is a similar type of transmission used by your TV remote. The timer comes with a built in infra-red transmitter.

In some cases you may need to extend the operating range of the timer or to use your camera behind a corner.  This is where IR extension cable comes-in, allowing you to reach further. The extension cable connects to one of the external sensor inputs using a 2.5mm plug. The cable length is 18 ft.

Camera Shutter Release Interface Adapter

If your camera does not support an infra-red remote, you can still connect the Timer to your camera using a shutter release cable. The shutter release cable supports single exposure as well as bulb mode exposures. Interface adapter electrically isolates the timer from your camera.

The camera shutter release interface adapter connects to one of the external sensor inputs using a 2.5mm plug. The other end accepts camera motor drive cable with 3.5mm (1/8") mono/stereo connector.

Use your existing motor drive cables or purchase them from us. Standard Pocket Wizard cables are supported including pre-trigger cables as well as ACC type. Alternatively, connect your camera through a Pocket Wizard device for wireless operation (requires separate 3.5mm to 3.5mm stereo or mono mini phone cable, not included).

The cable length is 6 ft.

Requires camera specific motor drive cable (sold separately). Pocket Wizard devices are not included.

Not for use with hot shoe adapter or flash.

Camera Specific Motor Drive Cable - Nikon Camera (10 pin connector)

For triggering the electronic shutter release of Nikon cameras equipped with a 10 pin Remote Terminal. For use with Shutter Release Interface Adapter.

From 3.5 mm (1/8") Stereo Mini phone To Nikon 10 pin connector.

Requires Camera Shutter Release Interface Adapter UPT_CAN_INT1.

The cable length is 2 ft.

Camera Specific Motor Drive Cable - Canon EOS Cameras (N3 connector)

For triggering the electronic shutter release of Canon cameras equipped with a N3 Remote Terminal. For use with Shutter Release Interface Adapter.

From 3.5 mm (1/8") Stereo Mini phone To Canon N3.

Requires Camera Shutter Release Interface Adapter UPT_CAB_INT1.

The cable length is 2 ft.

External Optical Sensor

The sensor can be used as a photo interrupter sensor with an off the shelf red laser pointer (not included). The sensor connects to one of the external sensor inputs using a 2.5mm plug.  To operate it, just point your laser pointer at the slot at the front of the sensor. Whenever the beam is interrupted, the sensor triggers the timer. The sensor is can be used with large and small objects.

The sensor is intended for indoor use. Strong light sources or sunlight may interfere with the sensor.  The sensor has a limited reaction time. Applications include detecting falling objects such as water drops.

External Optical Slot Sensor

The sensor is a stand alone photo interrupter. It is powered by the timer. The sensor connects to one of the external sensor inputs using a 2.5mm plug. The sensor contains its own infra-red light source. Blocking the slot triggers the timer.

The sensor is intended for indoor use. Strong light sources or sunlight may interfere with the sensor.  The sensor has a limited reaction time. Applications include detecting small falling objects such as water drops.

Hot Shoe Adapter

The hot shoe adapter allows you to connect a separate external flash to the timer using a 3.5mm plug. The timer supports both high voltage and low voltage electronic flashes.

The external flash needs to be setup for manual mode when operating with the timer. Flash units with positive center pin are supported.

Passive Infrared (PIR) Motion Sensor

Expand timer triggering options with passive infrared motion sensor. This type of sensor is commonly used in home security alarms and is activated by movement of a person or animal.

The sensor is approximately 2.4" x 1.8" in size and contains a 6ft cable. The sensor connects directly to the timer using one of the external sensor inputs.  The sensor is powered directly from the timer and does not need any batteries.

The sensor may require 1 minute stabilization after powering up. The maximum range is 20 feet (wide angle). The sensor is not suitable for fast moving objects. It re-triggers automatically every few seconds if motion continues to occur.

The sensor contains a 1/4-20 threaded fitting so that you can mount it on your camera tripod.

High Sensitivity Microphone

Enhance the sound triggering sensitivity of UPT_KIT1B timer with this high sensitivity microphone. The high sensitivity microphone provides approximately 20db boost over the standard sensitivity microphone.

The microphone is approximately 1.8" x 1" in size with 6ft cable. The microphone connects directly to the timer.  It is powered from the timer and does not need any batteries.

The microphone contains a 1/4-20 threaded fitting so that you can mount it on your camera tripod.

Requires UPT_KIT1B timer version (external microphone timer version).
